    The Orphanage (El Orfento)

I went to see The Orphange at the weekend and I have to say its pretty damn good.  That is, if you can cope with a Spanish movie in subtitles.  It has jumps when you wouldnt expect them, twists when you would expect jumps and a tragic and happy ending all at the same time.

Hollywood has commissioned an American version of the movie but I don't think it will be as good as this one.

    Anyone else seen it?

    Re: The Orphanage (El Orfento)

I have to admit I have a serious fear of horror films. My grandfather forced me to watch The Evil Dead when i was about 5 years old. It ended with me throwing up and to make things worse I happened to live beside a forest. So as you can imagine my mother was chuffed!. Well, anyhow, he was trying to make a man out of me - it failed!

so, I won't be watching it, christ, even the x-files scares me

I went to see this movie on day of release and really liked it.  Some really creepy moments in it!  Recommended movie if you're into horrors and not just the standard slasher movies that Hollywood has been churning out recently!

If you liked The Orphanage i can highly recommend Pan's Labyrinth which is amazing!

And it was also written/directed by Guillermo del Toro.  Didn't Pan's Labyrinth win an oscar for Best Foreign Picture?

Yep it certainly is.  It's won a few awards and am sure it managed to scoop an Oscar so could well be that one.

I've not seen any of his other work like 'Cronos' and 'The Devil's Backbone' which look pretty good so may have to invest when funds allow. Has anyone seen these?  I've seen the first 'Hellboy' movie which was by him as well but that wasn't brilliant but the second part looks better.

I never liked Hellboy.  I've read that the Golden Army is supposed to be a lot better (despite having a lower budget).  Del Toro's got this kind of weird visual style that I think works really well.
